The Growth
Today, there are 1700 Single Teacher Schools operating in the remote villages of Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Vellore, Ranipet, Thiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayavaram districts, providing Primary Education to 51,000 children in the age group of 5 to 12 years.
There are children from all communities from the rural and most backward areas, including children from the native Irula tribe.
Background of the villagers
The villagers in the rural areas work as casual labourers in factories and daily wage earners working in farmlands and paddy fields. Women work in factories and go for manual work. Such is the profile of the communities in which STS operates.
